Islam 101

  • Islam means submission,
one’s full and unconditional submission to the Creator.
Its root, ‘salama’ means to submit or surrender. From that root, many words are derived in the same context. ‘Salaam’ for example means peace since harmony prevails among people and everyone submits to the respect and observance of each other’s rights.
  • More About Fasting
The word ‘Iftar’ means to break fast and is also used just like the English word breakfast. In terms of fasting it refers to the meal taken after abstaining from food and drink from Dawn till sunset.  In winter, the day may be less than 12 hours but in the summer it can exceed 16 hours. Islam is not a new religion; rather it is a renewal of the true submission made to God by all the prophets, from Adam to Muhammad, may peace be upon them all. Its core is unconditional submission to the will of God, the One, the All Powerful, All Merciful and Everlasting, Creator of everything. He alone, do we worship, and He alone, do we draw assistance from.

Belief in the oneness of God is the essence of Islam from the time of our forefather Adam, peace be upon him. Practicing Muslims bear witness that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of God. Allah in Arabic literally means “The God” and is the exact word used by Muslims, Christians, Jews and everyone else that refers to God in Arabic.

In order to have a complete, well rounded faith, a Muslim should believe in Allah (God), His angels, His scriptures, and His messengers all of whom are loved and respected equally from Adam to Noah, Abraham to Moses, Jesus to Muhammad and all the prophets between them. Muslim also believe in the Last Day when everyone is held accountable, and believe in Divine destiny - whether pleasing or displeasing to the human.

Islam encourages questioning of the faith, for true faith can only be achieved with certitude in one’s heart as to the soundness of a chosen spiritual path. Muslims believe that the Quran is a Divine, everlasting miracle and perpetual assertion as to the authenticity of the message of the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and a tool for enriching one’s faith.

Unlike physical miracles that may generate passing awe in those witnessing it, the Quran is a perpetual source of awe to those who study it. The Quran gives anyone, from any generation, the opportunity to strengthen their faith and to recount previous miracles of God with such vividness it is as if the reader becomes a witness to the parting of the sea for Moses or Noah on the ark as the floods swelled up around him.

The Quran is not considered simply a religious text, but a complete guide for how a Muslim should live life. It gives not only spiritual guidance, but encompasses the social and moral framework for how a Muslim should interact with those around him in order to best please God. Perhaps the most poignant example of what a Muslim’s interaction should be with the Quran is that when the Prophet’s wife, Aisha, was asked to describe him, she replied, “He is the embodiment of the Quran.”

  • Submission, Faith, and Perfection of Goodness

The following exchange between the Angel Gabriel and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon both of them) gives us a concise description of Islam (submission), Iman (faith), and Ihsan (perfection of goodness).
