Some ideas and tips for successful Open Iftar events
| 1. | Where: | |
| a. | Find the most suitable place in your neighborhood. In the USA, some public libraries have meeting rooms and conference rooms that they rent out for free or for a nominal fee for community use or non-profit. They may even welcome to post some flyers in the library for their patrons to let them know about your event if it is open to everyone. | |
| b. | Community Centers are also a good place to seek inexpensive space and are often well trafficked by people in the neighborhoods. They too may be happy to publicize your event if you have it open to everyone. | |
| c. | On days with dry mild weather, a well lit park can be ideal. | |
| d. | Masajid, Islamic centers, or schools work well. | |
| e. | Student Associations and school based clubs may seek space from schools, colleges or universities. That allows the students to interact with each other in an informal and cordial environment. | |
| 2. | Foods to get: | |
| a. | It is best to avoid food that may be too messy such as soups or frosted cakes. | |
| b. | Not everyone likes spicy food so seek a mild to moderate spice or have spice as something that can be added on the side. | |
| c. | Pizza is welcomed by everyone. | |
| d. | Try to have something easy to pick up and eat – having some finger foods are easy to manage and more inviting to people. | |
| e. | Some people observe dietary restrictions. Having foods with no meats appeal to vegetarians, those observing kosher, and those strict about having only Muslim processed meats. | |
| f. | Some people are allergic to certain foods. It is nice to have the ingredients of the foods offered handy. | |
| 3. | Have some basic literature about Islam in case someone asks. Have a pen and paper handy in case someone would like more information. | |
| 4. | Refer people to http://OpenIftar.com to follow future events you may have and to rate the event they attended. | |
| 5. | Remember, your goal is to get to know people in the neighborhood and create a happy welcoming environment. Avoid confrontations even if it was initiated by an attendee and stress that the goal is to have an open community gathering not to argue. | |
| 6. | Make sure that you invite people you know in your neighborhood such as neighbors, co-workers, the friendly cashier at the supermarket, your mechanic etc. They are probably interested and they already know you so they are more likely to enjoy themselves and refer others. | |
| 7. | Try to gauge the number of people attending. Suggest that RSVP appreciated to help you plan and have adequate resources. | |
| 8. | Invite Muslims you know. They are likely to pitch in and help in organizing the event, and they can be very helpful in answering questions and networking with other event attendees. | |
| 9. | Share your thoughts and tips with others and read the tips from others in the community board. | |
